Weekly Golf Report 4/5/25
SATURDAY: On a weekend of strange, unexpected results and numbers the scores Saturday’s Medal round at Valley View were no exception.
For starters, on an absolutely perfect day for golf, numbers were down on recent weeks and those that did tee up found the going incredibly tough given the pristine conditions.
There was one exception with our Monthly Medalist in Pooch McHale the only player to even go close to bettering his handicap.
The 2024 Medalist of Medalists took home the May Monthly Medal with a round of 82-11-71 cruising to a three-shot win in the race for the Medal and A grade honours from Peter Noble with 88-14-74.
The key to Pooch’s win was consistency with nine par’s, eight bogeys and just one double bogey on his card.
Pooch’s round also won him the best gross score ball for the day in a countback from Belvoir Park’s Mark Perry.
Geoff Squires took out B grade with a score of 102-27-75 by one shot from Alan Curnow who posted a round of 99-23-76 with Alan adding the B grade best gross score ball to his runner’s up trophy.
In keeping with a nationwide trend, scores on the right-hand side of the Jack Bond scoreboard were particularly unspectacular with the ladies also struggling to make the most of the conditions.
Ultimately Von Morris got across the line with a round of 103-25-78 from a very unlucky Wendy Cox who went to the last hole with a commanding lead only to have A Gilligan’s Island like experience in the greenside bunker. Never the less Wendy would finish as runner up with 105-26-79.
Jan McHale had the best gross score of 103 taking that trophy in a count back from Von Morris.
Ball comp winners on the day were Kevin Bauerle with Nett 75, Lawrie Casey (75), April Medal winner Glen Laity (76), Mark Perry (77), Steve Browne (77), Peter Blackmore (77) and David Collins (77) in an overly generous ball comp.
Just to harp on the point, on a perfect day, there were only three Nearest the Pin winners on the Par 3 holes and they were Daryl Harrison (A grade 12th), Peter Sherman (B grade 12th) and Mark Perry on the 15th.
TUESDAY: Scores were a touch better on Tuesday with a clearly in form Pooch McHale warming for his medal round with 37 points to take out A grade in a countback from Graeme Harrison.
Brendan Cornwall was the B grade winner with 33 points in a countback from Tony Williams.
Paul Kuiper and Paul Newman lead the ball comp winners with 35 points with Peter Noble (34 points), Mick Gallivan (33), Kevin Humbert (33) and Rochester’s Colin Johnson (33) also taking home new rocks.
Colin Johnson was the only player that could find a green from the tee taking home the voucher on the 15th.
