Weekly Golf Report 31/5/26

Valley View personality Steve Usher, one of the few men on the planet that can make US President Donald Trump seem shy, may never have his mug shot on currency or an albino buffalo groomed and named after him but he has something the US Pres will never have …. a Valley View Monthly Medal Shirt.

The Modest One took out his first Monthly Medal at the weekend after years of near misses and despair that included multiple near misses where he finished as runner up in countbacks.

Steve’s luck changed at the weekend however, posting a round of 82-11-71 as he got the better of Graeme Harrison (87-16-71) in a countback. Mind you the luck was out for the rest of the field at presentation as Steve is more than capable of matching The Don when it comes to lengthy speeches and this was only exacerbated by the hideous headwear that he was sporting.

The win was particularly gratifying for Steve as he missed over 12 months of golf in 2024-2025 due to illness though he nearly threw it away late in his round three bogeys and a double bogey at the back end of his round before steadying with pars on his last two holes.

Harro meanwhile never really got going with the handful of pars on his card all but cancelled out by double bogeys on the 15th and 16th holes.

In B grade Alan Hausler finished his round with 95-21-74 and a comfortable four shot win from Parkland’s Mal Williams who had a round of 96-18-78.

Wendy Cox was also a four-shot winner in the ladies’ comp with a round of 93-22-71 with Jenni Bauerle the runner up with 93-18-75.

Shane Bywaters (80), Haus (95) and Jenni Bauerle (93) produced the best gross scores for the day and Shane lead the ball comp winners with Nett 74 with other balls going out to David Collins (Nett 74), Brett Radley (76), Daryl Harrison (78), Gary Cleary (78), Von Morris (78) and Mick Gallivan (78) on a day where the scoring fell away sharply.

One of the highlights of the day was Alex Kydd’s effort in eagling not one but TWO holes, the par five 5th and 18th holes though he picked a bad week to do so as Miles Gould had cleaned out the Eagles Nest on Tuesday with an eagle on the fifth.

Helen Emery was the headline act on the Par three holes picking up the ladies’ Nearest the Pin on the third (and a dozen jackpot balls) with a tee shot to within a metre of the pin. Other NTP winners were Ian Rathjen (B grade 3rd), Paul Kuiper (A grade 12th), Alan Curnow (B grade 12th) and Mick McAuliffe (First Tea voucher on 15th).

Parkland’s Ray Fella picked up the nearest second shot on the 13th however the second shot ball on the ninth went unclaimed.

The first semi-final of the Isaac Memorial 4 Ball event was also played with Alan Curnow and Kerry Kreeck cruising to a decisive 7&5 victory over Lawrie Casey and Kelly Cheong. A six-hole hot patch from Kerry proving the difference.

To Tuesday and Daryl Harrison (A grade) and Geoff Strachan (B grade) headed the field both with 35 points while Mick Gallivan (A grade) and Ian Scurrah (B) both finished as runners up with 34 points.

Ball winners were Mick Bell with 33 points, Lindsay Tatterson (33), Frank Broucek (33), David Collins (32) and Paul Newman (31).

Mick Pell won’t need to buy balls in a hurry as he also won balls for A grade NTP on both the 3rd and 12th holes as well as the best second shot on the 13th.

Ian Scurrah won the second shot ball on the ninth and Nick Holman took home the First Tea Voucher.

Wednesday’s 4BBB, was our annual fundraiser for the Royal Women’s Hospital. We thank Open House for their continued generous sponsorship of this event.

Winners on the day, Helen Armstrong and Judy Greer teamed very well to accumulate 45 points. Runners up, Sharon Harrison and Wendy Cox also had a good day finishing with 41 points.

A Grade nearest the pin on the 15th was Jan McHale and the B Grade winner was Sharon Harrison. Wendy Cox took home the Firstea nearest the pin on the 3rd.

In pennant, despite losing 2/3 to Hill Top, with Jenni Bauerle and Leanne Busch being winners on the day, Valley View on 10 points, remained at the top of the table courtesy of games won. Shepparton and Hill Top also finished on 10 points. Valley View is drawn to meet Shepparton in the final at Hill Top on Monday June 1st. The result will be in next week’s report.
