Valley View’s honor board will have a new name added to it after Brett Radley held his challengers at bay in the final round of the Club Championships on Saturday.

Starting the day with a seven-shot advantage over his nearest challengers in Ash Kuiper and Daryl Harrison, Brett opened the door for them with four bogeys to start his round which enabled Daryl to draw within four shots after he parred three of those first four holes.

But four pars over the next five holes steadied the ship and with a front nine 41 Brett went to the 10th tee with a five shot buffer after Daryl and Ash each put together front nine scores of 39.

From there Brett cruised to his first Valley View championship posting 41 on the back nine while Ash and Daryl drifted further on the way home with scores of 42 and 44 respectively leaving Brett a six-shot winner.

The final standings at the completion of the third and final round being Brett Radley (239), Ash Kuiper (245), Daryl Harrison (247), Mick McAuliffe (253) and Lawrie Casey (254).

Meanwhile a final round of Nett 71 saw Graeme Harrison take out the A grade Handicap event with a three round Nett total of 218. Lawrie Casey (220) finished two shots back after a final round of Nett 73.

Brett Radley (Nett 221), Paul Kuiper (225) and Kevin Humbert (225) rounded out the top five.

In B grade Rob Geisler effectively started the day with a four-shot lead after Social Butterfly Alan Curnow (who was three shots behind after the second round) was unavailable to play due to other commitments.

As a result, Peter Blackmore replaced Alan in the final grouping and he, John Burrows and David Collins all went to the first tee trailing Rob by four shots.

A final round of Nett 75 almost brought Rob undone with Shaun Bassett mounting a strong challenge with an excellent final round of Nett 70 only to fall one shot short.

The mathematically challenged Peter Blackmore also launched a challenge with Nett 73 finishing two shots off the pace while David Collins and John Burrows finished the championships with rounds of Nett 74 and Nett 75 respectively.

All this left Rob as the B grade handicap champion with a three round Nett total of 221, from Shaun (222), Peter (223), David (224) and John (226).

To Saturday’s stand-alone comp and Graeme Harrison’s round of 87-16-71 saw him emerge as the day’s A grade winner from Lawrie Casey who had a round of 85-12-73 and took out the runner’s up trophy in a four-way countback from Mick McAuliffe (82-9-73), Paul Kuiper (88-15-73) and Peter Mangan (86-13-73).

In B grade Shaun Basset was a comfortable three shot winner with his round of 93-23-70.

Jeff Carnie won another four-way countback for runner up with 94-21-73. Jack Hammond (91-18-73), Peter Nelson (106-33-73) and Peter Blackmore (90-17-73) were the unlucky parties in the countback.

Nat McAuliffe had a day out posting 98-30-68 to win the ladies’ comp by three shots from the consistent but media shy Wendy Cox who finished with (93-22-71).

Ball comp winners were Mick McAuliffe, Paul Kuiper, Peter Mangan, Jack Hammond, Peter Nelson, Peter Blackmore and Jenni Bauerle, all with Nett 73.

Nearest the Pin winners were Daryl Harrison (A grade 3rd), Andrew Purdey (A grade 12th), Ian Rathjen (B grade 3rd), Laurie Radley (B grade 12th), Nat McAuliffe (3rd) and Brett Radley (15th).

A very, very big thank you to our Round 3 sponsor in Bennetts Intersport for their very generous sponsorship on the day.

Tuesday’s A grade winner was Kevin Bauerle with 37 points and Mick Pell was the runner up with 36 points from David Collins in a countback.

In B grade John Neale won a three-way countback with 37 points from (runner up) Les Hall and Ron Dixon.

This week’ event is a 4Ball Multiple Stableford, so partner selection is crucial, not just for golfing ability but temperament as things can get a bit testy in this format if either player in a pair fails to score on a hole.

L-R Valley View A Grade Handicap Champion Graeme Harrison, Club Champion Brett Radley & B Grade Handicap Champion Rob Geisler.
