Weekly Golf Report 1/6/25
Coming up later in this report, breaking news from the View on a potential new role for President Mick McAuliffe.
But first to golf where the big headline this week was a tremendous round of 43 points from April Medalist Glen Laity.
Glen’s score gave him a three shot win in A grade from an unlucky but gracious Peter Noble who posted the very good score of 40 points which would see him taking home the winner’s trophy nine weeks out of ten.
Nine pars and a birdie three on the 11th were the features on Glenn’s card as he shot 80 off the stick with a 21–22 point front-back nine split.
Nobby was just as consistent with ten pars on his card on the way to 81 off the stick and a 22-18 point front-back nine split.
Those scores should see both player’s handicaps (of 15 and 13 respectively) take a nudge in a southward direction.
Kevin Bauerle and Stephen Browne were two shots back with 38 points scores that, again, would often see them on the dais as winners or runners up but this week they had to settle for balls in the ball comp.
Parkland’s Bevan McKenzie also had a good day taking out B grade with 37 points from runner up Corey Browne who had a round of 35 points.
The ladies too picked up the pace this week with Gill Thorsen registering another good score on the day with 38 points and recording a one shot win from Marie Watt with 37 points.
A further shot back Helen Emery and Jenni Bauerle both won balls with 36 points.
The last two balls in the ball comp went to Lindsay Tatterson and a visitor in Phillip Larkin with 34 points each.
David Collins (3rd) and Rod Breen (12th) won the A grade Nearest the Pin balls, Tony Williams picked up the B grade NTP ball on the 12th and Jan McHale the ladies NTP on the 12th.
Geoff Strachan played an excellent tee shot to within four feet of the pin on the 15th to take out the voucher but couldn’t match that accuracy with the putter as he settled for a two putt par.
Tuesday’s scoring was nowhere near as good with the exception of B Grade winner Tony Williams with 39 points and runner up Peter Sherman with 38 points.
The rest of the field struggled, David Collins the A grade winner with 32 points in a countback from Glenn Laity.
Jeff Carnie was the best of the ball comp winners with 34 points while balls also went home with Kelly Cheong, Ian Scurrah and Kevin Wootton all with 31 points.
Ron Dixon took home the B grade NTP ball on the 3rdand Tony Williams added the voucher on the 15th to his winner’s trophy.
Tuesday’s comp will now move to a 1030 assembly for 11am tee off.
To the breaking news regarding our Pres and with rumors rife around Spring Street that the Liberal Party might jettison in a potential new leader from outside it’s parliamentary party I understand that in addition to the usual names being put forward (such as Credlin and Frydenberg) an approach has been made to our very own Mick McAuliffe to see if he would be interested in a new challenge after almost a decade at the helm of Valley View.
I spoke to Mick over the weekend and the good news for Valley View members is that, while he refused to comment on the speculation, he was adamant that the 16 week a year parliamentary sitting schedule, fighting elections (not a factor at VV) and an expected tightening of the rules around the use of ministerial cars held no appeal for him.

Ladies Wednesdays Golf Report
Valley View Women played our annual 4BBB for the Royal Women’s Hospital last Wednesday. We were again sponsored by our long time sponsor Open House and a generous donation will be made to the hospital.
Winners on the day with the outstanding score of 48 points were Liz Haw and Wanda Hacon. Whilst both played well, all reports suggested that Haw had a great day on the greens. Runners up were Leanne Busch and Marlene Topp who finished with 42 points.
A grade nearest the pin was Wanda Hacon and Marlene Topp was closest in B Grade.
Some light rain and a nearby thunder storm interrupted the final round of winter pennant at Cobram on Monday May 26th. However, a determined Valley View team maintained their concentration to defeat Mooroopna and earn their place in the finals play off against Shepparton at Numurkah on Monday June 2nd. The 3/2 score line consisted of two wins, two squared matches and one loss, with four of the five matches going all the way to the 18th hole.
