Weekly Golf Report 11/1/26
After three horrendously hot days preceding Saturday our golfers enjoyed a more pleasant day as they took to the course for the 3rd round of the Summer Cup.
In A grade early riser Steve Usher set the afternoon field a target score of 37 points which was duly chased down by Brett Radley who matched that score from a handicap of five with a round of 76 off the stick.
Unfortunately for Brett he did most of his good work on the front nine and as a result Steve got the better of him in the countback.
Captain Gavon Armstrong also put together a 37 point round which was good enough to give him a one shot win in B grade from Paul Pappin with 36 points.
The day’s best scores however came from the ladies with Jan McHale finishing with 39 points and another one shot win from Merryn Anderson with 38 points.
Balls went down to 35 points with the recipients being Marlene Topp (37 points), Sharon Harrison (37) and David Hecter (36) along with Laurie Radley, Lawrie Casey, Peter Nelson, Marie Watt, Jenni Bauerle and Leanne Busch all with 35 points.,
Nearest the Pin trophy winners were Brett Radley (A grade 3rd), Kevin Humber (A grade 12th), Jeff Carnie (B grade 3rd), Laurie Radley (B grade 3rd), Wanda Hacon (15th), Helen Emery (2nd Shot 9th) and Rod Breen (2nd shot 13th).
With the final round of the Summer Cup to be played next month Saturday’s round has taken Brett Radley to the top of the table with a three-round aggregate of 114 points and he sits just one shot clear of Lawrie Casey with 113 points.
Laurie Radley (108), Pooch McHale (107) and Mick Gallivan (107) round out the top five for players with three completed rounds.
Two players who have only played two rounds to date in Alan Curnow and Peter Mangan both have aggregate scores of 77 points and (given only three rounds count) could strike with good scores in the final round.
Results for Tuesday 6 January:
A grade winner: John McHale (37 points)
A grade runner up: David Collins (36 points)
B grade winner: John Neale (35 points)
B grade runner up: Rox Dixon (34 points) in c/b from Les Hall
Balls: Paul Kuiper (35), Brad Edwards (35), Gordon Mackay (35), Brett Radley (34), Kevin Humber (34), Peter Mangan (34) and Les Hall (34).
Nearest the Pin: John McHale (A grade 3rd), Paul Kuiper (A grade 12th), Peter Sherman (B grade 3rd), Ian Rathjen (B grade 12th), Kevin Humbert (15th), John Burrows (2nd shot 9th) and Brad Edwards (2nd shot 13th).
Our Summer Pennant Team had a dramatic start to the Summer Pennant season with one pair in trouble before even reaching the Kialla course for Sunday’s match against Hill Top Blue.
Peter Blackmore towing his trailer and cart (along with playing partner Lawrie Casey riding shotgun) experienced a flat tyre a few kilometres out of Mooroopna as they raced to get to the course on time.
Alas, the situation only worsened when it was realized that the spare was also flat.
Fortunately, as the Dynamic Duo pondered their dire predicament a passing car (which fortuitously just happened to contain team members Mick Gallivan, David Collins and Paul Dickens) pulled over to see what all the shouting, swearing and arm waving beside the stricken car was all about.
A quick dash by Mick to Mooroopna to have the spare fully inflated saved the day as team captain David Collins frantically worked the phone to alert his team members already at Kialla that unavoidable changes to the batting order for the match would be required with Ash and Paul Kuiper moving up to the number two spot.
This clearly had a big impact on the psyche of the (clearly mentally fragile) team which subsequently went down 3 ½ to 1 ½ with the only pair to maintain their composure and post a win being …. Lawrie and Peter.
It was an actioned packed week for Blackers who on Tuesday was observed taking protective action with his nine iron against a handful of invisible snakes as he made his way down the 18th fairway. One can only hope that he replaced his divots once the fictitious reptiles had been taken care of.
For those still interested the Pennant Team’s match results were as follows:
Brett & Laurie Radley halved their match
Ash & Paul Kuiper lost 6&5
Gordon Mackay & David Collins lost 3&2
Mick Gallivan & Paul Dickens lost 7&6
Lawrie Casey & Peter Blackmore won 2&1
