Weekly Golf Report - 19/7/2023

While The Open at Royal Birkdale was played in warm sunny conditions Saturday’s Par event at Valley View was played in conditions more like the Moors of England with thick fog not lifting until well after tee off and descending again as early as 4pm as the final groups made their way from the course.

None the less a reasonable field braved the arctic conditions but, as with last week’s Medal event, only one player could get the better of the handicapper.

This week that player was Wil Harrison who took out A grade with +1 by two shots from Runner Up Mick Coyne who had -1 in a welcome return to form after a decent lay off following shoulder surgery.

Rochester’s Frank Broucek had the second-best round of the day finishing as the B grade winner with an even score while the club is launching a high level investigation into possible foreign government interference in the scoring system to ascertain how Mick Gallivan won the B grade runner’s up trophy.

Jenni Bauerle led a small but brave field of ladies’ home with a round of -5.

Ball comp winners were Nigel Dow with -2, Laurie Radley (-2) and Graeme Harrison (-3).

Peter Blackmore was the only player from the field to find a green from the tee taking out the B grade Nearest the Pin ball on the 3rd. Wil Harrison (13th) and Jenni Bauerle(9th) took home the best second shot balls.

On Tuesday Ian Brown put together the day’s best score of 38 points as he cruised to an eight-shot victory in B grade.

Peter Mangan was the A grade winner with 32 points while 30 points won Kevin Humbert and Peter Blackmore the A & B grade runner’s up trophies respectively.

Pooch McHale, Dave Gebbie, Daryl Harrison and David Collins all picked up balls in the ball comp, all with the lean score of 28 points.

As with Saturday, only one Nearest the Pin trophy was claimed with Ron Dixon finding the green on the third while Laurie Radley (9th) and Daryl Harrison (13th) won the second shot balls.

Ladies Wednesday Golf:

Valley View women played a two person Ambrose draw for partners last Wednesday. One playing group provided both the winners and runners up and after 18 holes were separated by just .25 of a stroke. Playing off a handicap of 9.25, Leanne Busch and Tracey Wade finished on 77.75 Nett, to win from Von Morris and Judy Greer off a handicap of 13, who finished on 78 Nett.

Tracey Wade was the winner of the nearest the pin on the 15th and she also claimed the Firstea voucher on the 3rd.
