Weekly Golf Report 2/11/25

The recent upward trend in scoring continued in Saturday’s Stableford event as our golfers tuned up for the upcoming Club Championships in the first Round of the Summer Cup.

After a slow start with just one point from his first two holes, fifteen handicapper, Pete Mangan went on a scoring spree dropping putts from all parts as he put together a round of 43 points.

That number gave Mango a three shot win from Mick Gallivan who took home the runner’s up trophy with a round of 40 points.

Lawrie Casey and Pooch McHale finished a further shot back as they led the list of ball comp winners.

Alan Hausler took out B grade with the second-best score of the day, 42 points, as he too recorded a three shot win with Paul Pappin the runner up with 39 points.

Brendan Cornwall finished next best 38 points and picked up a ball in the ball comp as did Daryl Harrison with 37 points, Brett Radley (36), Peter Sherman (36), Jeff Carnie (36) and Rory (36).

The ladies’ field was led home by Lynne Canavan who scored a decisive win with 39 points, four shots clear of the runner up in Helen Emery with 35 points.

One of the highlights of Lynne’s round was a near ace on the par three 15th as her ball pulled up just centimeters short of the cup a shot that netted her a birdie and the voucher.

Other Nearest the Pin winners on the day were Kevin Bauerle and Brendan Cornwall on the 3rd, John Canavan (B grade 12th) and Nat McAuliffe on the 3rd.

David Collins and Pooch McHale picked up the balls for nearest second shot on the ninth and 13th holes respectively.

On Tuesday Gordon “the Golfer” Mackay and Paul Pappin took out A and B grades respectively both posting scores of 38 points.

Mick Gallivan picked up the first of two A grade runner’s up trophies for the week with 36 points while club Captain Gavon Armstrong was the B grade runner up with 37 points.

The results sheet provided is devoid of other trophy winners though taking a stab at it I would think that potential ball winners were Kelly Cheong, Kevin Bauerle, Stuart Newton (all with 35 points) and Pooch McHale, Ron Dixon, Jeff Carnie and Laurie Radley who each had 34 points.

This week marks the first round of the Club Championships (incorporating the November Monthly Medal) which will be played over November 8th, 15th and 22nd.

Despite not playing much golf of late five-time champion Ash Kuiper is expected to be in thick of things again but should face strong challenges from the likes of Daryl Harrison, Mick McAuliffe, Miles Gould and maybe even Paul Newman.

In B grade I expect the likes of Alan Hausler, David Collins, Gavon Armstong, Geoff Strachan (if available) and Ron Dixon to be in contention going into the final round.

There will be two tee times for the first two rounds being 8am assembly and 1130am assembly while the final round will be an 1130am assembly for a midday hit off.
