Weekly Golf Report - 19/4/26

Our golfers took advantage of a return to much more pleasant autumn conditions on Saturday recording excellent scores in the Stableford event with the best coming from Helen Armstrong who took out the ladies’ comp with a massive 42 points.

That gave Helen a four-shot win from runner up Jan McHale who (for the mathematically challenged) finished with 38 a points which would be a winning score on many a day.

What’s more Helen’s score was six shots better than husband Gavon who took out B grade with 36 points.

The feature of Gavon’s round was his driving as he barely missed a fairway all day.

Biden like speaker Les Hall was the B grade runner up with 34 points.

Meanwhile Wil Harrison and Jonty Sefton took to the course much earlier in the day (probably as a pre-match footy warm up) with Wil setting the afternoon A grade golfers the imposing target of 40 Stableford points as his handicap of ten heads toward single figures.

That target proved to be too steep for those that followed with Rod Breen getting closest as he took the runner’s up trophy with 37 points.

Ball comp winners were Pooch McHale, Peter Mangan, Wendy Cox and Peter Blackmore (all with 36 points) along with Helen Emery and Steve Usher who both had scores of 35 points.

Peter Mangan (A grade 3rd), Johny Sefton (A grade 12th) and Rich River’s Greasy Wallace (First Tea Voucher 15tH) scored Nearest the Pin trophies while Geoff Strachan won the ball for best second shot on the ninth.

I once saw an online meme with the caption “Golf….. An easy game that is just hard to play”. Certainly, from my observations the sport seems to lend itself to extreme form fluctuations on a daily basis like no other I have played or watched and so it has been for our own Laurie Radley in recent weeks.

Earlier this month Laurie took out the April Monthly Medal with the exceptional score of Nett 65 only to back up the following Saturday to claim the NAGA – Encouragement Award with just 17 points.

Laurie was on the rollercoaster again four days later in last Tuesday’s comp nailing his tee shot on the par three 15th hole as he took home the First Tea voucher with his first Valley View hole in one.

I asked Laurie at the weekend if it was a shot that looked good off the club to which he responded “I don’t know I never saw it”! He didn’t elaborate on those comments but those who were present at presentations on the day tell me his recount of the shot was well worth hearing.

To the rest of Tuesday’s golf and Stuart Newton was the A grade winner with 38 points from Kevin Humbert with 36 while Ron Dixon enjoyed a one-shot win in B grade with 33 points from Paul Pappin with 32

Kevin Bauerle (35 points), Daryl Harrison (35), Mick Gallivan (35), Kelly Cheong (34) and Paul Kuiper (34) won balls in the ball comp while other trophy winners were Peter Blackmore (A grade NTP 3rd), John Burrows (2nd shot on 9th) and Paul Kuiper (2nd shot 13th )

This coming Saturday is ANZAC Day and, as we remember those that served our country, the Girgarre RSL will host its annual ANZAC Day 4BBB Stableford event.

Assembly is at 11am for tee off shortly after midday.

Ladies Golf Report: Last Wednesday Valley View women enjoyed a stroke round which was generously sponsored by the Fringe Factory.

In A Grade, little sister Leanne Busch, 91-19-72 had the better of big sister, Jenni Bauerle, 94-16-78, who was runner up on a count back from Marilyn West. Tracey Wade was nearest the pin on the 15th and Leanne Busch won the gross with her 91 off the stick.

In B Grade, Julie Neale returned to form with 101-27-74, to win from Bev Lyon, 101-27-76, who was runner up. Both players finished with 101 off the stick but Neale won the best gross on a count back. Lyon had the consolation of winning nearest the pin on the 15th.

Von Morris took home the Firstea voucher for nearest the pin on the 3rd.
