Weekly Golf Report - 15/3/26

Some of our Match & Handicap team report that the interruption to their pre-game routine of office duty tends to leave them out of sorts, at least for the first few holes of their round.

Not so our laconic and laid-back postman in Lawrie Casey who made his debut at the office window on Saturday filling in with all the urgency and efficiency that one would expect of a public servant.

Completely unflustered by the steep administrative learning curve he then set about producing one of his best rounds for some time taking out A grade with 38 points.

The highlights of his rounds were four birdies scored on holes 4, 15, 18 & 1 while his sometimes-inconsistent putting stood up to the task at hand.

Lawrie finished one shot clear of runner up Mick Gallivan who had 37 points (one birdie) and a further shot in front of Kelly Cheong with 36 points (two birdies).

Mick’s birdie came on the par three 3rd after hitting the green and making his putt from around five feet while the tee shot won him the A grade NTP trophy on the hole

Interestingly those three gents all played in the same group. Just saying.

Sean McDonell looks destined for A grade in the near future after another very good round posting the day’s best score of 41 points (from a handicap of 19) taking out B grade by three shots from the ever-consistent Geoff Strachan who had a round of 38 points.

On a perfect autumn’s day and a course in picturesque condition the scoring was very good all round and the ladies also cashed in with Bev Lyon claiming a one-shot win with 39 points from Julie Neale with 38 points.

For the second consecutive week the B grade field could not find the target on either the 3rd or 12th holes but Jan McHale (12th) and Shane Bywaters (15th) joined Mick Gallivan on the NTP trophy list.

Ball comp winners were John Gallivan with 37 points, Nat McAuliffe (37), Andrew Purdey (36), Kelly Cheong (36), Kevin Humbert (36) and Lynne Canavan (36).

Sean McDonell (9th) and Rod Breen (13th) picked up the nearest second shot balls.

My apologies as I don’t have Tuesday’s results to hand.

While I’m apologizing, I received significant feedback on last week’s column in respect of some grammatical and factual errors therein.

While grammatical errors are always embarrassing, I can only assume that those concerned with “factual inaccuracies” were first time readers.

My biggest concern this week was that our Monthly Medal winner was again missing from the action at the weekend!

This coming Saturday is our Annual Opening Day with the traditional Mixes Pinehurst Medley. I believe there are men and ladies looking for partners so get yourself organized for what is always a great day.

There will also be a Stableford event for the unmatched gents on the day.

I don’t official have confirmation of this but I would expect the day will kick off around 11am with a BBQ lunch.

 Ladies Wednesday Golf

Valley View women enjoyed the opening round of Winter golf last Wednesday with a shared lunch after play. Hurley’s Bar and Bistro Hotel were our generous sponsors.

Jenni Bauerle and Helen Emery both had outstanding rounds finishing with Nett 71. Bauerle won the count back and she also had the best scratch score of 87.

In B Grade a four way count back was required to determine the winner and runner up, when four players finished on 76 Nett. Bev Lyon was declared the winner and Marlene Topp was runner up. Julie Neale and Margaret Smerdon were the others in the count back. Bev Lyon was the Scratch winner with 102 off the stick.

Nearest the pins on the 15th went to Marilyn West in A Grade and Margaret Smerdon in B Grade. Wanda Hacon won the Firstea Café voucher for nearest the pin on the third.

Bev Lyon won the competition for least putts on a count back from Helen Emery when both had 25 putts.

Finally, well done to Judy Sutton for her win in C Grade at Swaggers at Hill Top last Friday.
