Despite some big numbers at the top of the leaderboard there were no surprises in the final round of the Summer Cup with Brett Radley adding the Summer Cup title to his Club Champion title that he claimed in November.

While Brett could only muster a score of 32 points in his final round the good news was that his challengers were in the same boat with the best scores on the day coming from golfers who did not complete the perquisite 3 rounds to be in contention.

Those scores came from Nathan Kuiper who set the course alight racking up 43 points as he took out B grade from a very unlucky Paul Dickens with 41 points.

In A grade Steve “The Confident One” Usher also had a score of 41 points and that gave him a three-shot win from “Old Man” Kelly Cheong with 38 points. The best news from that result was that, with Steve having played in the morning, the afternoon golfers were spared from one of his unique acceptance speeches.

Tracey Wade put together another good round taking out the ladies’ comp with 39 points from Marlene Topp with 36 points.

Ball comp winners were Sean McDonnel with 36 points, Kevin Humbert (35), Peter Blackmore (35), Laurie Radley (35), Kevin Bauerle (34), Ian Brown (34), Alex Kydd (33) and Paul Kuiper (33).

Nearest the Pin trophy winners were Paul Kuiper (A grade 3rd), Ian Brown (A grade 12th), Ian Rathjen (B grade 3rd), Sean McDonell (B grade 12th), Jennie Bauerle (12th) and Kelly Cheong (First Tea voucher 15th).

Kelly Cheong (13th) and Jenni Bauerle (9th) won the best second shot balls.

All that left the Summer Cup (top 5) standings as follows:

Brett Radley 114 points

Lawrie Casey 113 points

Laurie Radley 109 points

Peter Mangan 109 points

Alan Curnow 108 points

Thirty-seven points was the winning number on Tuesday with President Mick McAuliffe taking out A grade with that score while Laurie Radley won B grade also with 37 points.

The runners up in Daryl Harrison in A grade and John Burrows (B) were not far off the pace with scores of 36 points.

Balls went to Kelly Cheong with 35 points, Geoff Strachan (34), Kevin Bauerle (34) and Shane Bywaters (33).

Mick McAuliffe and Steve Piggot won NTP balls on the 3rd, Laurie Radley won the First Tea Voucher (15th) while Kevin Bauerle (13th) and John Burrows (9th) won the best second shot balls.

That is on course news for this week but there are some days when scores just don’t matter. That was the case on Saturday with our members arriving at the course to see the flag flying at half-mast following the passing of club stalwart Peter “Nobby” Noble on Friday night after a short battle with cancer.

Nobby’s passing is being felt by the entire club. A long-time member he has been club Treasurer at least 10 years (his second stint in the role) as well as being a long serving member of the Match & Handicap committee and former Golf Captain. He was also the Tuesday golf and Thursday night golf coordinator.

A larger-than-life personality Nobby was a naturally affable person and I always marveled at the way he could relate to people of varying walks of life making visitors and new members feel welcome at the club.

Forthright and honest you always knew where you stood with Nobby. He also an exceptionally generous person who would do anything to help out with a favor, something I know from personal experience.

In short, as a couple of the guys at the club have said to me, “he was just a bloody good bloke”. Enough said.

On behalf of everyone at the club we extend our condolences and best wishes to Cheryl, Adam, Candice, Mick, Wendy and families at this difficult time.

Vale Peter “Nobby” Noble, you will be missed more than could ever know.
