Weekly Golf & Bowls Report 27/4/25
SATURDAY: Comfortable, decisive, comprehensive. Choose whichever adjective you like to describe Daryl Harrison and Mick Pell’s win in Saturday’s Wally Shaw Memorial 4 Ball Aggregate event.
In an even team performance Mick and Daryl put together an aggregate score of 77 points leaving all challengers in their wake.
Parkland’s Brenton Sheppard and Billy Ryan finished nearest with 68 points and took out the day’s runner’s up trophy although as visitors they were ineligible to get their names on the honour board. This effectively left Peter Noble and Graeme Harrison as Mick and Daryl’s closest challengers for Wally Shaw Memorial honours with 65 points.
Either way I can’t recall a bigger margin in a four ball and Daryl and Mick’s score was the best posted in the event for a number of years.
Things were much closer in the ladies’ event although Helen Emery and Jenni Bauerle’s winning score of 64 points still gave them a nice three shot buffer over runner’s up in Julie Neale and Sharon Harrison who combined for an aggregate score of 61 points.
Along with Nobby and Graeme Harro, balls on the day went to David Collins and John Burrows with 64 points and Pooch McHale and Geoff Strachan with 62 points.
Daryl Harrison completed an excellent day taking home a dozen jackpot balls after leaving his tee shot on the 3rd within a metre of the hole before tapping in for birdie.
Other NTP winners on the day were Brenton Sheppard (A grade 12th), Mick Pell (B grade 12th), Jenni Bauerle (12th) and Gordon the Golfer Mackay (15th).
Winners of Wally Shaw Memorial - L-R Jenni Bauerle, Helen Emery, Daryl Harrison, Mick Pell
ANZAC DAY: Despite the threat of rain and a thunderstorm (both of which came late in the day) a very good field turned out for Friday’s Girgarre RSL ANZAC Day event, a 4 Ball Best Ball Stableford format.
In a much tighter affair than Saturday Peter Mangan and Lawrie Casey won with 46 points (a fleeting spike in form as neither fared particularly well on Saturday) in a count back from young guns Wil Harrison and Archer Backway.
Liz Haw and Wendy Cox won the ladies’ event with 44 points while Von Morris and Judy Sutton took out the runner’s up trophy in a countback from Marie Watt and Judy Greer with 42 points.
David Collins (A grade 3rd), Tom Holman (A grade 12th), Gavon Armstrong (B grade 12th) and Bev Lyon (15th) were Nearest the Pin trophy winners.
Winners: Men - Peter Mangan, Laurie Casey; Ladies _Wendy Cox & Liz Haw, Bowls - Geoff Tinning, Ruth Lennie & Noel West.
TUESDAY: A big week in golf started on Tuesday with Kelly Cheong taking out A grade with 36 points in a count back from Peter Noble.
Laurie Radley was a two-shot winner in B grade with 32 points leaving John Burrows and Ian Scurrah (30 points each) to fight out another count back for runner up with John getting the best of said count back.
Kyle Kidd (35 points), Kevin Humbert (35), Graeme Harrison (33) and Will Harrison won balls in the ball comp, Stuart Newton picked up the NTP ball for B grade NTP (3rd) and the voucher on the 15th was won by Peter Mangan.
This week’s event is the May Monthly Medal with assembly at 1130am.

LADIES GOLF REPORT: Wednesday’s event was our annual 18 holes Foursomes generously sponsored by Australian Consolidated Milk. Foursomes can be a challenging game as the alternate shot format means players can find themselves in unfamiliar territory courtesy of their playing partner.
A count back was required to decide the Scratch winners between the pairings of Bev Lyon and Helen Emery and Leanne Busch and Jenni Bauerle, when both finished on 97 off the stick. Lyon and Emery won the count back relegating Busch and Bauerle to the runners up position.
The Nett event was claimed by Marie Watt and Wanda Hacon who finished on 100-27-73.
The Scratch winners claimed the nearest the pins, with Bev Lyon successful on the 12th and Helen Emery on the 15th.
Important dates: Winter Pennant Monday 28th April, Bess Wood Memorial Day 30th April, then the Club Championships which will begin on Wednesday 7th of May.
