Golf - Weekly report 10/3/24

SATURDAY: On a scorching hot day, a rare even par round of 72 off the stick from Melbourne based five handicap member Mick Cromie, stole the show in Saturday’s Stableford event.

It was not as though he played in the cooler morning round either joining the afternoon golfers and putting together a scorcher of his own in a round that included four birdies and a back nine of 34 off the stick, not something that happens at Valley View every day.

What that meant Stableford point wise was 41 points and a two-shot win in A grade from a very unlucky Brad Edwards who had put together a fine round of 39 points earlier in the day.

Along way Mick also picked up the A grade nearest trophy on the 3rd and the Nearest the Pin voucher on the 15th, nabbing the honors from the grasp of Paul Kuiper in both instances.

It was a big day for Mick’s playing group which also produced the B grade winner in Peter “Penguin” Nelson, who (suitably inspired by Mick’s display) put together a round of 36 points which was good enough to secure a one-shot win from Brendan Cornwall who had 35 points.

Wendy Cox was the ladies’ winner with 35 points from Leanne Busch with 33.

Balls went to Mick McAuliffe with 36 points, Pooch McHale (36), David Collins (35), Lawrie Casey (35), Alan Hausler (34), Mick Gallivan (34) and Bud Thorsen (34) in another generous ball comp.

Aside from Mick Cromie, Nearest the Pin trophy winners were Mick McAuliffe and Alan Hausler (A &B grade respectively on the 12th) and Jeff Carnie (B grade 3rd).

On Tuesday Bud Thorsen won A grade with 36 points in a count back from Daryl Harrison.

A count back was also the order of the day in B grade with Geoff Squires the winner with 35 points from Ian Scurrah.

Balls went to Mick Gallivan (35 points), John Burrows (34), Kevin Humbert (34) and Peter Blackmore (34).

Bud Thorsen and Jeff Carnie (3rd) and Daryl Harrison (15th) took home the Nearest the Pin trophies.

A belated Happy Birthday to Les Hall who blew out 90 candles on Saturday. Happy Birthday Silver Fox!

Finally, a reminder about the Ern Healey Memorial Day on 24 March. The event is a Men’s 4BBB Stableford and the day kicks off with a BBQ lunch at 11am.

Bookings are essential and further details are on our Web Site and Face book page or contact Daryl Harrison on 0408 369 705.
