Weekly Golf Report - 28/4/2024

Lawrie Casey is not a man to make rash predictions so when he told me early last week that he and Peter Blackmore were “good things” to win both the Anzac Day 4Ball and Saturday’s Wally Shaw Memorial then I “took it to the bank”.

Alas, they didn’t get across the line on ANZAC Day (for which Lawrie lays the blame solely with Blackers) but they did make good on the Wally Shaw part of the equation on Saturday with an aggregate score of 71 points (Blackers 37 and Lawrie 34).

That secured the dynamic duo their first honor board event win with John McHale (30) and Geoff Strachan (38) the runners up with an aggregate score of 68 points.

While Lawrie and Peter got their first taste of success in this event Bev Lyon and Marlene Topp combined brilliantly to take out their sixth win in the ladies’ event, a truly remarkable effort.

Bev contributed 37 points and Marlene 34 as they too finished with an aggregate score of 71 points and a comfortable six shot win from runners up Sharron Harrison (33 points) and Julie Neale (32) which (for those readers without calculators) gave them an aggregate score of 65 points.

Ball comp winners on the day were David Collins and John Burrows (67 points), Les Hall and Geoff Squires (64), Steve Browne and Laurie Bradley (64), Jake Gascoyne and Tom Holman (64) and Helen Armstrong and Marg Smerdon (64).

Nearest the Pin winners were Mick Gallivan (A grade 3rd), Jamie Elliot (A grade 12th), Geoff Squires (B 3rd), Trudy Denham (12th) and Wil Harrison (15th).

A special mention to Mick McAuliffe and Alan Hausler who were comfortable NAGA winners with 48 points of which Mick contributed the “bulk” of that score with 26 points.

Tuesday’s results:

A Grade

Winner: Peter Mangan 38 points

R/Up: Kevin Humbert 37 points (countback from Graeme Harrison)

B Grade

R/Up: Alan Hausler 38 points

Thursday’s results (Girgarre RSL 4BBB Stableford & Callaway)

Callaway Winner: Ben Fletcher Nett 72

Don’t forget Friday’s Annual Tournament. If you wish to inquire or book a spot in the field, please phone Gavon Armstrong on 0419 097 494. Otherwise, I’m pretty sure it will be okay to turn up on the day with assembly at 1130am. I can also report that we will be joined for the day, and again on the Saturday for the May Monthly Medal, by a very special guest.
