Weekly Golf Report 1/3/26
Despite some good rain earlier in the week our golfers signed off the final round of summer with some very good scores on Saturday on a track that still had plenty of run.
In A grade 13 handicapper Rod Breen put together an excellent round of 81 off the stick that netted him 40 Stableford points and a four-shot win from Kelly Cheong who had 36 points.
Lawrie Casey and Pooch McHale were among a twelve-player contingent that finished with 35 points and they were two of the seven members of that group to take home balls in the ball comp.
Meanwhile the B grade field was on fire with Rushworth’s Ian “Bomber” Rathjen at the forefront with the day’s best score of 41 points.
In a very consistent display “Bomber” had six three-point holes, 11 two-point holes and just one, one-point hole on his way to a one-shot win from an unlucky Ron Dixon who finished the day with 40 points.
Nathan Kuiper and Peter Nelson were not far off the pace with very good 38-point rounds and they led the B grade ball comp winners, a group that also included Steve Hammond with 37 points and Jack Hammond with 35 points.
It was a good day for the Hammond family with Jo taking out the ladies’ event with 39 points finishing a comfortable three shots clear of runner up Helen Emery with 36 points. Along the way Jo also won the ladies’ NTP ball on the 3rd hole.
Sharon Harrison and Lynne Canavan rounded out the day’s ball comp winners with 35 points each.
The men’s NTP trophies were won by David Collins (A grade 3rd), Kelly Cheong who made birdie on 12, John Canavan (B grade 3rd), Ian Rathjen (B grade 12th) and Steve Hammond (First Tea voucher 15th).
Kelly Cheong (13th) and Colin Rangltonga (9th) won the nearest second shot balls.
On Tuesday Kelly Cheong took out A grade with 38 points in a countback from Lockington’s Stuart Newton while Jeff “Cobba” Carnie was the B grade winner with 36 points from Geoff Strachan with 35 points.
Ball winners were Pooch McHale with 37 points, Peter Mangan (34), Kevin Bauerle (33) and Gavon Armstrong (33).
Nearest the Pin trophy winners were Scott McLennan (A grade 3rd), Kelly Cheong (A grade 12th), Gary Cleary (First Tea voucher 15th), Kelly Cheong (2nd shot 13th) and Frank Broucek (2nd shot 9th).
Scoop
Ladies Wednesday Golf: Von Morris was surprised to be named the winner of the Stableford round at Valley View last Wednesday believing her score of 32 points would not be enough to claim a win. Jan McHale was runner up with 28 points on a count back from Gill Thorsen. Obviously not a high scoring day.
Away from home, several Valley View women played in the two day Seniors Tournament at Murray Downes last week. Congratulations to Helen Emery who won the competition for the best score over the two days in the Division for players over 70. Von Morris was the winner of the under 70 Division on day two. Jenni Bauerle and Janice Johnstone picked up nearest the pins.
